"The designers, who have raised $15,000 from a UCSD grant and an art festival award, hope to hand out phones for free in Mexico. "

""There are many, many areas in which every American would say I don't like the way my tax dollars are being spent. Our answer to that is an in-your-face, so what?" says UCSD lecturer Brett Stalbaum, 33, a self-described news junkie who likens his role to chief technology officer."

Gore: Polar ice may vanish in 5-7 years

link

This may or may not be true, but my question is what does the computer models say if you change the amount of C02 released into the atmosphere. Does cutting off all man-made emissions change anything or does the ice melt anyway? If the ice melting can be stop at well level to we need to reduce emissions to?

The problem with these models is that they don't reflect reality. Just like a mutual fund manager that got lucky one year, doesn't mean he will be accurate the next. What we need is predictions that can be tested for accuracy. After Katrina, they were all predicting more and bigger hurricanes, guess what, that didn't happen.

If Gore, G.E., Goldman Sachs, et al. are all trying to make money off of trading carbon emissions, does that reduce emissions or just make in more expensive for the consumer?

Obama Defends War

I wonder how many liberals are regretting their vote now. Probably none, but it must be driving a few crazy.

Nobel-winning Obama defends war in call for peace

"I face the world as it is, and cannot stand idle in the face of threats to the American people," Obama told his audience in Oslo's soaring City Hall. "For make no mistake: Evil does exist in the world."

"A nonviolent movement could not have halted Hitler's armies. Negotiations cannot convince al-Qaida's leaders to lay down their arms."

"To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism, it is a recognition of history."

Groupthink and the global warming industry

A good read.

Groupthink and the global warming industry

"... The New York Times' leading climate reporter, Andrew Revkin (whose name appears in some of the e-mails), won't publish the contents of the e-mail on the grounds it would violate the scientists' privacy. Can anyone imagine the Times being so prissy if such damning e-mails were from ExxonMobil, never mind Dick Cheney?"

"For instance, it was pretty impossible for reporters to independently investigate whether Saddam Hussein had WMDs, and since the most established authorities agreed he had to have them, the news media reported the consensus, which turned out to be wrong."

Global Warming Liars?

Hacked E-Mail Is New Fodder for Climate Dispute

"...they show that climate scientists conspired to overstate the case for a human influence on climate change."

"In one e-mail exchange, a scientist writes of using a statistical “trick” in a chart illustrating a recent sharp warming trend."

"Some skeptics asserted Friday that the correspondence revealed an effort to withhold scientific information. “This is not a smoking gun; this is a mushroom cloud,” said Patrick J. Michaels, a climatologist who has long faulted evidence pointing to human-driven warming and is criticized in the documents."

"Through the last century, tree rings and thermometers show a consistent rise in temperature until 1960, when some tree rings, for unknown reasons, no longer show that rise, while the thermometers continue to do so until the present."

-Why is this important? Because if use tree rings for data when thermometers readings weren't taken then your distorting the data. You would need to throw out all use of tree rings, then you limited to just a few years since data from thermometers is limited. And thus you can't make any valid conclusions about global warming.

Stopping global warming with a very long garden hose.

ABC 20/20 10/23/09
http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=8904740

"
Freaked Out Over SuperFreakonomics
Global warming might be solved with a helium balloon and a few miles
of garden hose.
By BRET STEPHENS

Suppose for a minute—which is about 59 seconds too long, but that's for another column—that global warming poses an imminent threat to the survival of our species. Suppose, too, that the best solution involves a helium balloon, several miles of garden hose and a harmless stream of sulfur dioxide being pumped into the upper atmosphere, all at a cost of a single F-22 fighter jet.

Good news, right? Maybe, but not if you're Al Gore or one of his little helpers.

The hose-in-the-sky approach to global warming is the brainchild of Intellectual Ventures, a Bellevue, Wash.-based firm founded by former Microsoft Chief Technology Officer Nathan Myhrvold. The basic idea is to engineer effects similar to those of the 1991 mega-eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines, which spewed so much sulfuric ash into the stratosphere that it cooled the earth by about one degree Fahrenheit for a couple of years.

Could it work? Mr. Myhrvold and his associates think it might, and they're a smart bunch. Also smart are University of Chicago economist Steven Levitt and writer Stephen Dubner, whose delightful "SuperFreakonomics"—the sequel to their runaway 2005 bestseller "Freakonomics"—gives Myhrvold and Co. pride of place in their lengthy chapter on global warming. Not surprisingly, global warming fanatics are experiencing a Pinatubo-like eruption of their own.

Mr. Gore, for instance, tells Messrs. Levitt and Dubner that the stratospheric sulfur solution is "nuts." Former Clinton administration official Joe Romm, who edits the Climate Progress blog, accuses the authors of "[pushing] global cooling myths" and "sheer illogic." The Union of Concerned Scientists faults the book for its "faulty statistics." Never to be outdone, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman scores "SuperFreakonomics" for "grossly [misrepresenting] other peoples' research, in both climate science and economics."

In fact, Messrs. Levitt and Dubner show every sign of being careful researchers, going so far as to send chapter drafts to their interviewees for comment prior to publication. Nor are they global warming "deniers," insofar as they acknowledge that temperatures have risen by 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit over the past century.

An Interesting Article on "V" and conservatism in Hollywood.

The Hidden Truth Behind ‘V’

"Like many conservatives, I was intrigued and excited by the promos for ABC’s reboot of one of my favorite mini-series, “V.” Finally, we thought, one of us had infiltrated the system and slipped one by the hippies who run Hollywood. Even better, we hoped that ABC, in a brash display of “corporate greed” had decided to green-light a series that appeals to the many of us (the majority of the country actually) who are less than enthralled by the hopey changeiness of the current administration.

But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. As my colleague Jeffrey Jena pointed out, the show’s writer is a devout leftist and Obama supporter. " ....

Proposal on Health Care Fraud

Watching a 60 Minutes program, billions of dollars have been wasted on fly-by-night organizations. Because Medicare is required to pay a bill submitted in 45-60 days, fraud is rampant.

My proposal: Every organization that requests medicare fund must have it's officers and owners submit photo ID, fingerprints and DNA before any payments can be made. This will prevent repeated abuse and allow the criminals to be tracked down.

Another Example of U.N. Stupidity.

UN investigator warns US on use of drones

"A U.N. human rights investigator is warning the United States that its use of unmanned warplanes to carry out targeted executions may violate international law.

Philip Alston says the U.S. will increasingly be perceived as carrying out indiscriminate killings in violation of international law unless the government explains the legal basis for targeting particular individuals and the measures it is taking to comply with international humanitarian law which prohibits arbitrary executions.

His comments Tuesday came as the U.S. has increased the use of Predator drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan and is considering stepping up their use even further against al-Qaida and Taliban targets.

Alston, the U.N. Human Rights Council's investigator on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions, told a news conference the U.S. response — that the Geneva-based council and the U.N. General Assembly have no role in relation to killings during an armed conflict — is untenable."

Taking Lessons from Hugo Chavez

It appears the Obama administration has taken a page out of Chavez's playbook by demonizing Fox News and Chamber of Commerce.

Windmills

I like windmills, but there are many problems with them. They kill birds. The most efficient production area are far from consumption areas. Alternative energy plants (nuclear, coal or gas) have to be built to supply the equivalent energy when the wind isn't blowing, etc.

But I wonder what would be the impact of large scale farms. I haven't been able to find out any research so this is just speculation.

The windmill converts the energy in the wind into electricity. But doing this reduces the amount of energy is the remaining wind. How many windmills can be built before it impacts the environment? Will it effect where the rain falls? Can it turn a area to a dessert or cause droughts? Or cause floods as rain falls in more concentrated area? Will it effect the migration of birds?

A TRUE IRISH GHOST STORY

This happened a while ago in Dublin . And even though it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock story, it's true.

John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a storm. No cars were traveling that night.

The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stop. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door.... only to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on!!

The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life.

Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared through the window and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand repeatedly came through the window, but never touched or harmed him.

Shortly thereafter John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road. So, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to the pub. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the frightening experience he had just had.

A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying and.... wasn't drunk.

Suddenly the door opened and two other people walked in from the stormy night. They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one of the fellows said to the other,
'Look Paddy...There's that freakin' idiot that got in the car while we were pushin' it!'

He joins others that show just the aspiration of the committee, like Al Gore, International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, and Yassar Arafat. What was one considered a meaningful prize is now just a farce.

Did Code Pink show it true partisan colors?

Code Pink Supports Afghanistan War?

"The staunch women's anti-war group Code Pink has advocated complete withdrawal of troops from both Iraq and Afghanistan. The group has organized countless protests and even one Code Pinker with blood-colored hands called then-Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice a war criminal during a congressional hearing in 2007.

But one report says the group is now rethinking its position on the Afghanistan war. The Christian Science Monitor reports that during a recent trip to Kabul, local Afghan women told Code Pinkers the situation is a lot more complicated than they think. Afghan member of Parliament and women’s activist Shinkai Karokhail told the group's founders: "In the current situation of terrorism, we cannot say troops should be withdrawn."

Those concerns convinced the founders that setting a deadline is not in Afghanistan's best interest. Medea Benjamin, Code Pink co-founder, said: "We would leave with the same parameters of an exit strategy but we might perhaps be more flexible about a timeline... So many people are saying that, 'If the U.S. troops left — the country would collapse. We'd go into a civil war.' A palpable sense of fear, that is making us start to reconsider that.""

Self-ownership

"Self-ownership (or sovereignty of the individual, individual sovereignty or individual autonomy) is the concept of property in one's own person, expressed as the moral or natural right of a person to be the exclusive controller of his or her own body and life. According to G. Cohen, the concept of self-ownership "says that each person enjoys, over himself and his powers, full and exclusive rights of control and use, and therefore owes no service or product to anyone else that he has not contracted to supply"

link

Some have traced the concept of self-ownership to certain individuals such as John Locke, who said, the individual "has a right to decide what would become of himself and what he would do, and as having a right to reap the benefits of what he did."[2] Or, as stated more succinctly by Locke, "every man has a Property in his own Person."[3]

Sovereign-minded individuals usually assert a right of private property external to the body with the reasoning that if a man owns himself then he owns his actions, including those which create or improve resources; he therefore owns both his own labor and the fruits thereof.[4]

Inflation Ahead?

There are rumors that the world will drop the dollar as the global currency. What does that mean to you? Instead of using dollars to buy oil, the U.S. will have to exchange the dollar for other currencies. With China owning $2 trillion dollars, and the oil exporting holding another $2 trillion, don't expect a quick move (some say the switch will occur in nine years). But what are they going to do with the dollars? If they dump them, the value of the dollar decrease and all imports (like oil) will increase. This will result in inflation in the U.S.

Why would they do this? Because they a see a country going deeper to debt and spending beyond in means. The porkulus bill, health-care, cap-and-trade are all hurting the U.S. The question is whether the U.S. can increase non-agricultural exports significantly given a cheaper dollar.

Of course the enemies of the U.S. favor this. As the U.S. goes deeper into debt it will have to stop defending the world, giving them greater opportunities to cause mischief / expand influence. The extreme-right and extreme-left will demand the retreat of the military all around the world. Of course this will be followed by reducing aid to countries, and eventually possibly retreating to an isolationist policy.

How much profit should a health insurance company make?

Who Is Making the Biggest Profits From Health Care?

"Over the past year, “the profit margin for health insurance companies was a modest 3.4 percent,” Newman points out, quoting data provided by Morningstar, a company that rates mutual funds. Morningstar would have no reason to low-ball the insurance industry’s profits; its readers are looking for highly profitable sectors of the economy where they can invest. But the health plan industry is not one of those sectors: insurers ranks 87th out of 215 industries."

"“Among the large, for-profit health insurers” Newman adds, “profit margins line up with the industry as a whole. UnitedHealthGroup, the biggest health insurer, had a 4.1 percent profit margin over the past 12 months. WellPoint, the next biggest, had a 4 percent profit margin. Aetna, Cigna, and Humana came in below that.”

"But this isn’t to suggest that no one in our for-profit health care industry is making money. “Pharmaceutical companies have a profit margin of 16.4 percent,” Newman reports, “seventh highest of the 215 industries that Morningstar tracks.” "

Health Care: Simple Rules to Solve a Problem

(1) If Insured, a company cannot drop you if you have an illness.
(2) If Insured, a company cannot raise your rate more the average of the raise of all it's other policies.
(3) If Insured, if a company finds a mistake or false-hood a company cannot avoid paying for illness not related to mistake or falsehood. If the illness is related, then the company can refuse to pay for illness. (e.g. if you find out you have cancer, lie about it, get a policy then the company can refuse to pay for all related issues, but if you cut your finger off with a handsaw, they would have to pay for it (if it was originally covered)).

Amtrak also confirmed to me that West Coast members of the rail security unit — most of whom come from Special Forces, counterterrorism and other military service — have been denied police credentials. According to OSSSO sources on both coasts, the rival Amtrak Police Department, in conjunction with the local police union in California, have stymied the process over labor issues (OSSSO members are non-union)."

Insurance: The problem with the health care debate.

Insurance is meant to cover the unusual.

Your term life insurance, the insurance company takes some basic facts, your age and general health, figures the amount of people who will die in your category with the year and makes your premium accordingly. For example on a $100K policy if one out of 100,000 thousand die at age 35, they could charge you a dollar (plus cost, profits, etc.) If at age 55 one out of hundred die, they would need to charge $1000 (plus...). If at 99, where 99,999 out of a hundred thousand die, they would charge over $100,000 (because of costs, etc.)

When you buy car insurance, you pay an amount that takes in account accident potential (age, driving experience, where you live), theft and storm damage potential, and damage to others (medical bills, property damage). But your car insurance doesn't cover things oil changes, the gas you but in your car, washing and waxing your car, maintenance, new tires, etc.

Medical Insurance should be the same way, it should pay for the unusual, not the ordinary. Today most people don't pay for anything or pay a small co-pay or 20% of the bill. If you go to the doctor most of the cost is covered by the insurance company, so people have no incentive to do price shopping, even if they could.

What they need to do is have a doctors/hospitals have a standard price list that can be compared.

Some people think that the medical system can not be abused, who would go to hospital for cancer treatment if they didn't have cancer. see http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/04/01/0401er.html

Some would abuse the system to get attention, maybe a bed for the night or some food and drugs. If you know you can get an operation for free maybe you don't make life-style changes: drink less alcohol, quit smoking, exercise, etc. Maybe you get viagra for recreation use. Maybe when you get a headache, instead of taking two aspirins and go to bed, you go to emergency room for a CAT scan. Instead of buying a walker, you get the motorized scooter. Instead of taking the recondition pace-maker you demand only the latest and greatest.

Embattled ACORN orders independent investigation

Obama and Acorn

Obama and Acorn

I suggest you read the whole article.

"Good Help Is Hard to Find
Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck also aired the San Bernardino Acorn tapes last night, and in introducing them, he made an excellent point:

[America, ask yourself this question. Either ACORN has the most corrupt hiring practices, lowest standards or you just can't find anyone in the inner city that's a decent human being.
Now, I don't believe that one. I don't think ACORN wants to make that case. Really? Well, that's the case you'd better make, ACORN.]

But the previous day, National Public Radio's Frank James had offered precisely that excuse:

[It's also important to keep in mind that ACORN's workers are coming from the same low-income neighborhoods the organization serves, with all that entails--poor schools, high crime and the sorts of social problems that have been documented for decades.
So the flaws conservatives are pointing out about ACORN are not so much problems associated with that organization per se but more about the problems of being poor and minority in urban America.]

ACORN scandal growing, third video made public

"The hits just keep coming for ACORN. Last week two undercover videos surfaced showing ACORN employees giving advice on how to avoid paying taxes and start up a prostitution ring with underage girls illegally smuggled into the U.S. This morning a third video was made public."

"In the video the pair specifically say they wish to open a brothel. They also say in no uncertain terms that Giles began "working" as a prostitute at age 13, and that they will be importing 13 underage girls from El Salvador. They say the girls are under 16 years old. For example, say someone is shot in stomach. But in country B, they see him right away, they give him pain killers, blood transfusions, x-rays, have a team operate on him for 5 hours, spends 5 days in post-op, given antibiotics, etc. but the guy dies anyway. Which Country has the better medical system?

According to the WHO study, Country A, because they spend less with the same result. Who do you think is has the better medical system?

Obama and the Bureaucratization of Health Care by Sarah Palin

The president's proposals would give unelected officials life-and-death rationing powers.

By SARAH PALIN

Writing in the New York Times last month, President Barack Obama asked that Americans "talk with one another, and not over one another" as our health-care debate moves forward.

I couldn't agree more. Let's engage the other side's arguments, and let's allow Americans to decide for themselves whether the Democrats' health-care proposals should become governing law.

Some 45 years ago Ronald Reagan said that "no one in this country should be denied medical care because of a lack of funds." Each of us knows that we have an obligation to care for the old, the young and the sick. We stand strongest when we stand with the weakest among us.

We also know that our current health-care system too often burdens individuals and businesses—particularly small businesses—with crippling expenses. And we know that allowing government health-care spending to continue at current rates will only add to our ever-expanding deficit.

How can we ensure that those who need medical care receive it while also reducing health-care costs? The answers offered by Democrats in Washington all rest on one principle: that increased government involvement can solve the problem. I fundamentally disagree.

Common sense tells us that the government's attempts to solve large problems more often create new ones. Common sense also tells us that a top-down, one-size-fits-all plan will not improve the workings of a nationwide health-care system that accounts for one-sixth of our economy. And common sense tells us to be skeptical when President Obama promises that the Democrats' proposals "will provide more stability and security to every American."

With all due respect, Americans are used to this kind of sweeping promise from Washington. And we know from long experience that it's a promise Washington can't keep.

Let's talk about specifics. In his Times op-ed, the president argues that the Democrats' proposals "will finally bring skyrocketing health-care costs under control" by "cutting . . . waste and inefficiency in federal health programs like Medicare and Medicaid and in unwarranted subsidies to insurance companies . . . ."

First, ask yourself whether the government that brought us such "waste and inefficiency" and "unwarranted subsidies" in the first place can be believed when it says that this time it will get things right. The nonpartistan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) doesn't think so: Its director, Douglas Elmendorf, told the Senate Budget Committee in July that "in the legislation that has been reported we do not see the sort of fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending by a significant amount."

Now look at one way Mr. Obama wants to eliminate inefficiency and waste: He's asked Congress to create an Independent Medicare Advisory Council—an unelected, largely unaccountable group of experts charged with containing Medicare costs. In an interview with the New York Times in April, the president suggested that such a group, working outside of "normal political channels," should guide decisions regarding that "huge driver of cost . . . the chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives . . . ."

Given such statements, is it any wonder that many of the sick and elderly are concerned that the Democrats' proposals will ultimately lead to rationing of their health care by—dare I say it—death panels? Establishment voices dismissed that phrase, but it rang true for many Americans. Working through "normal political channels," they made themselves heard, and as a result Congress will likely reject a wrong-headed proposal to authorize end-of-life counseling in this cost-cutting context. But the fact remains that the Democrats' proposals would still empower unelected bureaucrats to make decisions affecting life or death health-care matters. Such government overreaching is what we've come to expect from this administration.

Speaking of government overreaching, how will the Democrats' proposals affect the deficit? The CBO estimates that the current House proposal not only won't reduce the deficit but will actually increase it by $239 billion over 10 years. Only in Washington could a plan that adds hundreds of billions to the deficit be hailed as a cost-cutting measure.

The economic effects won't be limited to abstract deficit numbers; they'll reach the wallets of everyday Americans. Should the Democrats' proposals expand health-care coverage while failing to curb health-care inflation rates, smaller paychecks will result. A new study for Watson Wyatt Worldwide by Steven Nyce and Syl Schieber concludes that if the government expands health-care coverage while health-care inflation continues to rise "the higher costs would drive disposable wages downward across most of the earnings spectrum, although the declines would be steepest for lower-earning workers." Lower wages are the last thing Americans need in these difficult economic times.

Finally, President Obama argues in his op-ed that Democrats' proposals "will provide every American with some basic consumer protections that will finally hold insurance companies accountable." Of course consumer protection sounds like a good idea. And it's true that insurance companies can be unaccountable and unresponsive institutions—much like the federal government. That similarity makes this shift in focus seem like nothing more than an attempt to deflect attention away from the details of the Democrats' proposals—proposals that will increase our deficit, decrease our paychecks, and increase the power of unaccountable government technocrats.

Instead of poll-driven "solutions," let's talk about real health-care reform: market-oriented, patient-centered, and result-driven. As the Cato Institute's Michael Cannon and others have argued, such policies include giving all individuals the same tax benefits received by those who get coverage through their employers; providing Medicare recipients with vouchers that allow them to purchase their own coverage; reforming tort laws to potentially save billions each year in wasteful spending; and changing costly state regulations to allow people to buy insurance across state lines. Rather than another top-down government plan, let's give Americans control over their own health care.

Democrats have never seriously considered such ideas, instead rushing through their own controversial proposals. After all, they don't need Republicans to sign on: Democrats control the House, the Senate and the presidency. But if passed, the Democrats' proposals will significantly alter a large sector of our economy. They will not improve our health care. They will not save us money. And, despite what the president says, they will not "provide more stability and security to every American."

We often hear such overblown promises from Washington. With first principles in mind and with the facts in hand, tell them that this time we're not buying it.

I Can't Believe He Did That

Obama Underwrites Offshore Drilling

So why are we borrowing money from China to give to Brazil so they can drill oil for China?

"The U.S. is going to lend billions of dollars to Brazil's state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil's Tupi oil field in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil's planning minister confirmed that White House National Security Adviser James Jones met this month with Brazilian officials to talk about the loan."

Guess who owns a big portion of Petrobras: George Soros.

"Billionaire investor George Soros bought an $811 million stake in Petroleo Brasileiro SA in the second quarter, making the Brazilian state-controlled oil company his investment fund's largest holding. "

Looks like Soros's investment in Obama has paid off.

Proposal on Health Care.

We know that a lot of stuff is added or change when a bill is reconciled between the House and the Senate. My proposal is that before the final bill is voted on the public is given 30 days to read the bill.

That a document would be prepare to explain the bill in terms we can understand. If the bill says, "change line 21 in Law X from 500,000 to 2 million", that the document would say, it means giving Corporation Z a tax right-off of 2 million versus 500,000 for doing Y.

And that when any further changes are made, and additional 14 days are given for public comment.

What Would Jesus Do? and Lilly Ledbetter

Many liberals and socialist proclaim they are followers of Jesus yet ignore his teachings. Below is passage on which someone had a different interpretation than I.

Take the Lilly Ledbetter law which is to resolve unequal pay. Lilly agreed to certain wage, and after learning others were paid more, wanted more. This is in contradiction of this parable. The socialist or liberal would require equal wages, forcing the owner to either pay more than he could afford to the first worker or being less generous to the last.

Scripture: Matthew 20:1-16

1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; 4 and to them he said, `You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went. 5 Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, `Why do you stand here idle all day?' 7 They said to him, `Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, `You go into the vineyard too.' 8 And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, `Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.' 9 And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10 Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, 12 saying, `These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' 13 But he replied to one of them, `Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?' 16 So the last will be first, and the first last."

Does he even know what he is saying?

Obama: "Every time was are in sight of health insurance reform, the special interest fight back with everything they got. They use their influence, they run their ads. And their political allies try to scare the heck out of everybody. We can't let them do that again."

The special interest, the drug companies, are running ads on TV (Harry and Louise) supporting reform. While most people with insurance are happy with their insurance plan, they are trying to scare people in a radical reform.

They say can "save" 60% of the increase expected cost by eliminating fraud and waste. If it was so easy, why hasn't it been before now?

They say 45.7 million (2007) do not have insurance. 9.7 million were not citizens.

An "estimated that about 14 million of the uninsured were eligible for Medicaid and SCHIP" link

"In addition, some of the 46 million could theoretically afford health coverage, but chose not to purchase any. In 2007, 17.6 million of the uninsured had annual incomes of more than $50,000 and 9.1 million earned more than $75,000. "

"The Census figures also show that 18.3 million of the uninsured were under 34. Some in this age group may have simply determined that they are young and healthy and thus can do without coverage. "

Will this be the future of government care?

Death Drugs Cause Uproar in Oregon

"The 64-year-old Oregon woman, whose lung cancer had been in remission, learned the disease had returned and would likely kill her. Her last hope was a $4,000-a-month drug that her doctor prescribed for her, but the insurance company refused to pay.

What the Oregon Health Plan did agree to cover, however, were drugs for a physician-assisted death. Those drugs would cost about $50. "

Are We Moving towards Communism?

The White House now wants people to inform them of people's casual conversations. Shades of Soviet Communism and the Nazis.

"There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov."

one link of many

The government is using the taxpayers money to buy the votes of the lower classes. Now it is starting "snitching" efforts. They pass bills they don't read and too fast so the people cant complain/inform their representatives in time. Are we quickly being transformed into a Communist nation?

Thomas Schelling on Global Warming

"It's a tough sell. And probably you have to find ways to exaggerate the threat. "

Why is this guy the "Science Czar"?

Obama's Science Czar Considered Forced Abortions, Sterilization as Population Growth Solutions

The three authors summarize their guiding principle in a single sentence: "To provide a high quality of life for all, there must be fewer people."

"The 1,000-page course book, which was co-written with environmental activists Paul and Anne Ehrlich, discusses and in one passage seems to advocate totalitarian measures to curb population growth, which it says could cause an environmental catastrophe."

"To help achieve those goals, they formulate a "world government scheme" they call the Planetary Regime, which would administer the world's resources and human growth, and they discuss the development of an "armed international organization, a global analogue of a police force" to which nations would surrender part of their sovereignty."
---
"Vitter grilled Holdren during the hearing, asking him to clear up his 1986 prediction that global warming was going to kill about 1 billion people by 2020.

"You would still say," Vitter asked, "that 1 billion people lost by 2020 is still a possibility?"

"It is a possibility, and one we should work energetically to avoid," Holdren replied."

Media Bias Mea Culpa

Reporter admits media bias against Palin.

Sarah 'Barracuda' Palin and the Piranhas of the Press

A good article with many examples from other journalists.

Some quotes:

"But the true villains in this political morality play may have been the press."
"Our journalism model is busted, too."
"In the 2008 election, we took sides, straight and simple, particularly with regard to the vice presidential race."
"What I am saying is that we simply didn't hold Joe Biden to the same standard as Sarah Palin, and for me, the real loser in this sordid tale is my chosen profession."
"From the beginning, and for the ensuing 10 months, the coverage of this governor consisted of a steamy stew of cultural elitism and partisanship."
"Women columnists turned on Sarah Palin rather quickly. A plain-speaking, moose-hunting, Bible-thumping, pro-life, self-described "hockey mom" with five children and movie star looks with only a passing interest in foreign policy -- that wasn't the woman journalism's reigning feminists had envisioned for the glass ceiling-breaking role of First Female President (or Vice President). Hillary Rodham Clinton was more like what they had in mind – and Sarah, well, she was the un-Hillary."

"The first thing reporters and commentators seemed to have noticed about Gov. Palin was her physical beauty. The second was that she had a bunch of kids, the last one born with Down's syndrome in spring 2008. For some reason, these two facts infuriated many Democratic activists and bloggers – and some liberal journalists."

"This proved a harbinger, too, as misinformation slipped easily from the left blogosphere into mainstream coverage."

"The Times, for example, which found the alleged transgressions of an actual presidential candidate (John Edwards) unworthy of investigation, managed to find room for three Page One stories touching on the sex life of a vice presidential candidate's daughter."

Cash for Clunkers ???

Ok, the government wants you to get rid your old car and wants you to get a new more fuel efficient new car. Ok, skipping the fuel costs in building and transporting a new car, how much is saved.

Say you have two cars, one getting 18 mpg and the other 12 mpg. And you buy a new car with 22 mpg.

At 4 mpg savings, the new car will use 101.01 gallons less per 10,000 miles. At 10 mpg savings, the new car will use 379.78 gallons less per 10,000 miles. If the old car would have lasted 10K miles, it would have cost the taxpayers, $34.65 per gallon saved at 4 mpg, or $11.88 at 10 mpg more efficient. If the old car had stay on the road for 100K miles, at 4 mpg less efficient it would have used 1010 more gallons of gas or $3.465 cost per gallon for the taxpayers, or 3787 gallons saved at a cost of $1.188 per gallon saved at 10 mpg efficiency.

Best case: Currently getting 10 mpg, buy a car with 45 mpg. That would by save 777.77 gallons by 10K miles. Or costing the taxpayer $5.78 per gallon at 10K, or $0.58 per gallon for 100K miles.

If it is a clunker, how many more miles would you get? How much is this worth?

A discouraging word?

Did Palin resignation doom further political office?

I question those who believed she doomed a further run for the Presidency. Yes, she may be viewed as a quitter. But if McCain had won in November she would of quit then. Secondly, did not Obama and Biden "quit" their jobs as Senators?

Would a year and half more in the Governor do her more good? Those who dismissed Alaska as a small state before would not have been impressed if she had 2 full terms. Already she has done more than Obama had done when he ran for the Presidency.

Of course, she may just want to play with a role like Newt Gingrich, providing support other candidates in their campaigns.

The biggest clue to her future is the need of her opponents to still try knock her down. If she wasn't a further threat, they would just leave her alone. No, they are afraid of combining her popularity with the growing TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party movement. A populist charismatic conservative female frightens the liberal "Women's Movement".

My prediction, should Cap and Trade pass this year, the effects on job losses and higher bills will be noticeable by 2011. If global temperature continue to decline despite China building a new coal plant a week and India's increasing C02 output, Palin will be good position for a run.

Why Palin's Resignation Make Sense.

As I started to write this, I have decided that Palin has made an excellent decision.

If she is being blocked in Alaska government with spurious ethics charges (15-0) and her opponents will prevent her agenda from succeeding, then staying on an additional year and a half would do her no good nor the state any good. If she did not plan to run for another term leaving now gives her successor (which I assume she believes will follow the same agenda as hers) will give him a better chance in winning the next election.

If she is spending 80% her time fighting ethics charges, and it is costing the State millions to investigate and her family $500K to fight, then it makes little sense to continue on. Her opponents will say she quit because of this and of course it will make a great 30 second ad. Had she wished just to remain the governor for another term, it would have shown politically weakness. But if she already decided not to seek another term, then it makes sense to leave now.

If pundits are right, she can make $50K to $100K a speech. These could help pay-off her legal defense bills. Leaving also limits the amount of new spurious ethics charges. If she plans to run for President, then she can build the funds necessary for a run. Giving the current situation, remaining as Governor just hamstrings her. She will now be able to freely leave the state and campaign for others.

It also allows her to spend more time with her family. Something that must be appreciated if she does run for President (2 years running, 8 years governing).

I suspect that the building of the Alaskan gas pipeline through Canada will have started by 2014. This will give her a big boost for a 2016 election bid. Six years of campaigning on a national level could give her a strong base.

It is also possible that the Democrats will mess things up so bad that Obama will be seen as defeat-able in 2012. If she campaigns for congressional candidates in 2010 and has an impact on the races, she could be in great position for 2012.

On the health care bill.

The Democrats are saying 46 million Americans are uninsured. This implies they are not getting health care now. So if they become insured, but there are no additional doctors, nurses, etc., does that not imply that there will be longer waiting times?

If the government offers a plan that pays doctors, nurses, hospitals less will there be more people becoming doctors and nurses or building hospitals?

Kennedy, Dodd unveil trimmer Senate healthcare bill

"Americans who refuse to buy medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a healthcare overhaul bill unveiled yesterday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Obama’s top domestic priority."

Is it fair to charge a healthy adult who doesn't feel he needs insurance, maybe making minimum wage, a fine so others (maybe an illegal alien) can get insurance?

Why the economy will continue to stall.

Looking for a recovering economy in the next few months? Don't bet on it.

First, there are the bond investors, with the takeover of the banks, Chrysler and General Motors by the government, do not expect many to buy bonds from any company that may become a target of the government.

Second, government debt. With the increase of government debt, do not expect any company to borrowing money with short term debt. If the economy recovers, most experts believe interest rates will skyrocket. Therefore, any company borrowing money for expansion would be wise to borrow in such a manner as to not expose them to borrowing money at a cost they couldn't repay. Therefore, companies will be shy to expand on borrowed funds.

Third, cap-and-trade. Cap and trade, if passed, will increase electricity costs. India has already said it will not impose C02 restrictions. China is also not likely too. So if a company is going to expand, if it can, it will expand to those countries. Thus reducing jobs in the U.S. and delaying or reducing any recovery.

Science losing to politics.

The black-listing has already begun. We are entering a dark period for the truth.

Warmists deny Copenhagen access to polar bear scientist

"But one of the world’s leading experts on polar bears has been told to stay away from this week’s meeting, specifically because his views on global warming do not accord with the views of the rest of the group."

"Dr Mitchell Taylor has been researching into the status and management of polar bears in Canada and around the Arctic Circle for 30 years, as both an academic and a government employee. More than once since 2006 he has made headlines by insisting that polar bear numbers, far from decreasing, are much higher than they were 30 years ago. Of the 19 different bear populations, almost all are increasing or at optimum levels, only two have for local reasons modestly declined."

EPA May Have Suppressed Report Skeptical Of Global Warming

Where is the outrage that was present when the mirror-opposite happened in the Bush administration?

"Less than two weeks before the agency formally submitted its pro-regulation recommendation to the White House, an EPA center director quashed a 98-page report that warned against making hasty "decisions based on a scientific hypothesis that does not appear to explain most of the available data."

"The EPA official, Al McGartland, said in an e-mail message to a staff researcher on March 17: "The administrator and the administration has decided to move forward... and your comments do not help the legal or policy case for this decision."

"Alan Carlin, the primary author of the 98-page EPA report, told CBSNews.com in a telephone interview on Friday that his boss, McGartland, was being pressured himself. "It was his view that he either lost his job or he got me working on something else," Carlin said. "That was obviously coming from higher levels." "

"Carlin's report listed a number of recent developments he said the EPA did not consider, including that global temperatures have declined for 11 years; that new research predicts Atlantic hurricanes will be unaffected; that there's "little evidence" that Greenland is shedding ice at expected levels; and that solar radiation has the largest single effect on the earth's temperature. "

"The revelations could prove embarrassing to Jackson, the EPA administrator, who said in January: "I will ensure EPA’s efforts to address the environmental crises of today are rooted in three fundamental values: science-based policies and programs, adherence to the rule of law, and overwhelming transparency." Similarly, Mr. Obama claimed that "the days of science taking a back seat to ideology are over... To undermine scientific integrity is to undermine our democracy. It is contrary to our way of life."

"All this talk from the president and (EPA administrator) Lisa Jackson about integrity, transparency, and increased EPA protection for whistleblowers -- you've got a bouquet of ironies here," said Kazman, the CEI attorney. "

Global Warming Update: Weather Forecasting

He is a guy who claims to make accurate forecast up to 12 months ahead of time.

He believes we are in a cooling session until 2013.

" If I'm to believe Corbyn, his scrawls represent something conventional science says cannot exist: a detailed weather forecast that reaches nearly a year into the future. "

"the 11 months' worth of scribbled forecasts he shows me were made using a proprietary method he says correlates solar activity with weather on Earth. But to forecast that far ahead would mean foretelling the movement of inherently chaotic weather systems, and that, contend his detractors, defies the laws of physics. "

"Corbyn bets on his forecasts. Unusual among bettors of any stripe, he wins regularly. The check on the wall is a payout from London bookmaker William Hill on one of their monthly bets. "

"Corbyn's conviction that the sun's behavior is the driving force behind earthly weather patterns is linked to another deeply held belief: The sun and radiation from outer space play a far more important role than the burning of fossil fuels in any global warming that might be taking place. The purveyors of the principal theory of global warming, he says, have sold the world a bill of goods. "If you piss in a lake, the level will go up," says Corbyn. "But it wouldn't be an important factor. [Human contribution to carbon dioxide levels] is not as minuscule as that, but it's not important."

Proposal for Medical Insurance.

Each person would be given up to $5000 tax credit. Thus a family of four would be given up to a $20,0000 tax credit.

To pay for deductibles, medicine, eye care, dentistry, etc, a separate health care account can be established. This account would carry over from year to year. Funds can be transferred to other health accounts. Any money left over after death would go to a government health care account.

So if a married couple with two children buys insurance for $11,000 a year, they would be able to tax $11,000 off their taxes. They could then add an additional $9,000 to their health care accounts.

This would provide an incentive to shop around for insurance so that savings can be added to the health care account.

Any company supplied insurance would count as ordinary income.

If the tax credit exceeds the amount of taxes paid, the additional amount would go the the health care account.

Example. John Doe pay no federal income taxes. He pays $300 a month to Blue Cross, for $3600 a year. He would get back from the federal government $3600, plus $1400 would be added to his health care account.

Example: Jane Smith has a husband and two kids. Her company pays $22,000 a year for her insurance. Jane's income would go up $2000, ($22,000 - 4*$5000). At a 30% tax rate, Jane would pay $600 more in taxes.

Population of United States is under 310 Million. So that would be $1.550 trillion per year max cost.
